Questions. I Have Questions– September 2024

I’m sitting in my hotel room in downtown Denver right now, shivering, because the room’s air-conditioner is blowing right on me. I had pause to shut it off, but of course the room will now get too hot with no airflow.

Why do 90% of hotel rooms aim the air conditioner vent right at the desk? It seems completely ridiculous, but if it’s something you weren’t aware of before, look at it the next time you stay at a hotel. Most of the time, the desk is exactly where the room air is blowing.

This is just one of many seemingly unrelated questions that are buzzing around my head as I hit the road for two straight weeks. As I sit here between meetings, I figured I’d jot a few of them down and share them, just to make sure it’s not just me who’s noticed things are a bit strange.

Another question is why do airlines lie? Now we all know they lie as easily as the sun shines, but why? My flight to Denver this past Tuesday was supposed to depart at 11:41am. It was showing as on time, and the incoming aircraft we were to use (coming from Boston) was also showing on time. 3 hours before departure we were hit with a delay “because an earlier delay impacted your plane’s arrival.”

But the flight from Boston was still on time, and the new incoming aircraft that was assigned to us was also on-time. It was just scheduled for arrival about an hour after we were to have departed. Um, which earlier delay were they talking about?

What must have happened was the Einsteins that run United must have rejiggered a bunch of planes to accommodate something (setting off a full day of one-hour late flights to Denver) but if that’s the case why not say that? ‘…Your flight was delayed for about an hour so that we could minimize a significant impact to another flight in our network…’ What would be so bad about telling the truth? By sending passengers an obviously provable lie it just breaks down trust even further.

My next question is about a story that I just heard on the news. Apparently the US government has just discovered that airlines are devaluing their frequent-flyer programs and wants an explanation? Really? They JUST discovered this? What else did they just discover? Fire? Electricity? Nine out of ten dentists prefer sugarless gum?

I just have so many questions…….
